Private Health insurance

Private health insurance applies differently to outpatient mental health care than many people expect, and there are some important things to know before your appointment.

Psychology

Many private health fund extras policies include psychology consultations, with rebates depending on your fund, policy and annual limits. Importantly, you cannot claim both a Medicare rebate and a private health rebate for the same session. If you have a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, the Medicare rebate will usually be the better option for your first 10 sessions each year. Private health extras can then apply to sessions beyond that limit, depending on your cover. Contact your fund before your appointment with the item code provided by reception to confirm exactly what rebate you will receive.

Psychiatry

Private health insurance does not generally cover outpatient psychiatric consultations; these are supported by Medicare instead. Private health hospital cover becomes relevant if a private hospital admission is recommended, in which case your fund, the hospital and your treating clinician will confirm coverage before any admission occurs.

Advanced treatments

Private health insurance generally does not cover outpatient TMS or esketamine treatment costs beyond Medicare and PBS support, although some plans include certain related services. We recommend confirming with your insurer before commencing treatment. Reception will ensure you understand all costs upfront, and written informed financial consent is provided before treatments such as esketamine begin.
